I live in Boston and work at an advertising agency creating digital things that are a bit more cutting edge than not. I'm also curious about startups. more
The Lee family is the most prominent Korean family business, in 2007 the total sales of the Samsung Chaebol had sales of $174 billion, 17% of South Korea’s GDP and this graph and article illustrate how the family stays in control. A round about circle of controling interests and a circle of shareholding.
PlayStreet is a Korean startup providing a walking view of Korean streets. With the helpful store labels it’s like an augmented reality of the dense and complex Korean shops packing around Seoul. It’s a definite one up on Google Street View.
I’m an idiot. I played a Wondergirls’ Irony instead of playing the video above at a chill lounge sessino at Hill. As a friend pointed out, I should always start with Anyband instead of Wondergirls, it is an agency after all.
Anyband is an unbelievably amazing concept from South Korea by Samsung putting together a music group of Korea’s hottest pop stars into an epic joint promotion. Effectively, it’s a giant electronics manufacturer creating a KPOP band to promote cell phones. This video is Talk Play Love and Promise U, a two part music video shot in Brazil to promote the connetivity of Samsung Anycall cellphones. There is nothing like this in the west, nothing.
“After dragging its heels for months, Korea’s telecommunications regulator finally came around and declared WIPI, a local software standard mandated for data-enabled mobile phones, a mistake.”
Stunning, the WPPI has been a huge hinderance for the advancement of Korean handphones and the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) finally broke the WIPI standard. It basically means the iPhone will hit Korea at KTF and SK Telecom and Korea’s most notable domestic handphone producers, Samsung and LG, are going to be forced to step up.
This is pretty much great news to everyone and especially to consumers. A more competitive Korean handphone market will surely impact the US and Apple gets to play in one of the most connected places on Earth.
