Behind Lady Gaga Inc. The marketing machine powered by her monsters is brilliant.

“Roberson says the goal in expanding [Kanye] West’s brand is to decrease his dependence on music for money. Just as a magazine publisher wants to have a balance between advertising and subscription revenue, for instance, West wants to have something resembling parity between his music and non-music related ventures. Or, to borrow a line from his mentor Jay-Z, West doesn’t just want to be a businessman, he wants to be a business, man.”
Isn’t it ironic how after you make it as an artist your goal is diversifying cash flow? Cash is king.
“Lady Gaga, with her army of nearly 2.8 million Twitter followers and more than 5.2 million Facebook fans, can move product. Since fall 2008, her digital-single sales have exceeded 20 million and her album sales hit 8 million, all at a time when no one under the age of 60 buys CDs anymore (see Susan Boyle breaking the record for highest first-week album sales last year). Now, she’s being courted by marketers to do the same for their products.”

Kanye West - Welcome to Heartbreak
I’m a huge fan of this song but conceptually this video is flat out brilliant. The torn pixels and transition bleeds found in a common codec flaw become the video itself. It’s also inspired since so much of music is based on flaws from audio producing devices like turntables and vinyl that created scratching. So why not take the next step and use the flaws common in the visual medium, the blocks and bleeding of modern codecs and compression of the MPEG generation, to create a video that flows between flaws and manipulation so familiar to audio. Stunning video, wonderful concept.
